Making sense of machine data in the age of multicloud at Splunk.conf 2018
A reputation built on accessibility to machine data, Splunk Inc. is well positioned for market dominance thanks to an adaptable set of data analytics and management solutions. But can Splunk maintain ready adaptability as its customer base demands more specialized tools in emerging trends for multicloud, artificial intelligence, and internet of things environments?
Looking to answer these and other questions, SiliconANGLE is at Splunk.conf18, currently underway in Orlando, Florida, with exclusive commentary and interviews from our roving news desk, theCUBE. TheCUBE coverage will begin on Tuesday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m. ET and end on Wednesday, October 3, at 5:30 p.m. ET. (* Disclosure below.)
The market for big data analytics, or BDA, has seen exponential growth over the past few years as enterprises move out of the experimentation phase of trial processes and into implementation. Improved offerings from IT support organizations in streamlined integrations and cloud deployment propelled global BDA by 24.5 percent in 2017, exceeding growth rate expectations and positioning it to become a $66.7 billion market by 2021.
Over the past year, Splunk has broadened its offerings in cloud and the IoT through acquisitions like that of security company Phantom Cyber Inc. and startup VictorOps Inc. and improvements to existing software, including the addition of AI capabilities to mitigate risk of outages.
By continuing to grow its portfolio to meet changing customer needs, Splunk has earned a front-running position in big data analytics. With an 11 percent market share, the company is the largest in pure play big data software and fastest growing among the top vendors in worldwide IT operations management.
“Splunk is one of those companies that, by virtue of their success using a software as a service cloud model and their competence, and a startup with appeal for IT administrators, have been able to move into other domains successfully,” said Peter Burris, an analyst with Wikibon (owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE).
Splunk’s focus on aligning developments directly with customer solution needs is a tactic that could promote its utility in the enterprise market. Research shows that only nine percent of organizations are succeeding in applying big data efforts toward revenue, and 40 percent are still working through a challenging platform transition.
“Splunk is doing a good job of extending their customer base into new domains as indicated by customers, because their basic infrastructure is sound enough to support new functions without compromising product quality and integrity,” Burris said.
Their strategy is proving to be a successful one. Splunk’s 2018 second-quarter revenue report showed 39 percent year-over-year growth, and the previous quarter saw its addition of 550 new enterprise customers. The company forecasts total annual revenue for 2018 to reach $1.685 billion.
Will Splunk be able to continue adapting its technologies to match its growing customer base’s pace of modernization? All this and more will be explored at Splunk.conf. 2018.
Keynote speakers at Splunk.conf include Doug Merritt, president and chief executive officer of Splunk; Tim Tully, chief technology officer of Splunk; and Arnold Donald, chief executive officer of Carnival Corp.
