When two people meet for the first time, it usually takes a few minutes to find common points of interest. When Amazon Web Services Inc. sits down to assess the needs of a new or potential customer, the conversation often turns quickly to data protection. And that’s usually when Commvault Systems Inc. comes into the picture.
“The amount of data that customers are needing to protect is growing twofold every two years,” said Sabina Joseph (pictured, left), head of global partnerships and alliances and group leader of digital innovation, storage, high-performance computing and solutions at AWS. “When we talk to our customers, one of the very first workloads they are moving into the cloud is backup of data. Customers are always looking for a wide integration of Commvault’s solutions across our services.”
Joseph spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), principal at The CTO Advisor, during Commvault GO 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was joined by Jeanna James (pictured, right), senior manager of global alliances at Commvault, and they discussed the evolution of the AWS/Commvault partnership and how customers are using the services offered as part of digital transformation in the enterprise. (* Disclosure below.)
The partnership between Commvault and AWS began five years ago with an S3 integration, according to James. Since then, the service integrations have expanded to include Glacier, the AWS low-cost data storage service, and Snowball, a data transport solution.
“Our integration points have become deeper and wider,” James said. “We’ve started to do more on the go-to-market side.”
One of the customers taking advantage of the joint partnership between AWS and Commvault is Dow Jones & Co.. “They’ve gotten rid of a lot of their data centers, moved a lot of their infrastructure into the cloud, so they’ve been able to become more agile as a business,” James explained. “Lowering cost, scalability, global infrastructure — those are the big things for digital transformation that we see customers wanting to embrace.”
