Periscope Data makes it easier to analyze data from multiple storage platforms

Analytics company Periscope Data Inc. hopes to help its customers tap into diverse data sets much more quickly with a new tool announced today.

Data Engine enables faster access to a variety of data warehouses. It was optimized to deliver faster queries on both Amazon Web Services Inc.’s Redshift and Snowflake Computing Inc.’s cloud-based data warehouse services.

Data warehouses are federated repositories for all of the data collected by an enterprise’s various operational systems. They’re mainly used to capture data from diverse sources for access and analysis purposes. Data warehouses are really just a relational database housed either in an on-premises server or in the cloud. Data from various online transaction processing applications and other sources is selectively extracted for business intelligence activities, decision support and to answer user inquiries.

Data warehouses serve a useful purpose, but in today’s increasingly complex information technology landscape, some companies have found themselves in a bit of a muddle after opting to use more than one such service. The issue is one of different horses for different courses, with some data warehouse options providing specialized benefits for certain kinds of workloads, at the expense of others.

If a company uses just one data warehouse, it inevitably struggles with poor query performance for other portions of their data analysis, in exchange for quicker processing it provides in certain areas. The solution involves using multiple data warehouses, but that causes other problems because it’s a time-consuming process to select the best service for each workload.

Periscope’s Data Engine is aimed at helping eliminate these problems by routing its queries through the best-equipped data warehouse for each kind of workload. Customers can then use multiple data warehouse services and let Periscope worry about which one should be used.

“Deciding which data warehouse to turn to for processing and analysis was an arduous process in the past,” said Annie Flippo, head of data science at mobile advertising platform provider ThinkNear Inc.

Periscope said it will bolster Data Engine’s capabilities in the coming months by adding new data storage and processing options to ensure customers have access to the best technology for every type of workload.

The addition of Data Engine to Periscope’s product lineup is the latest update in what has been a busy year for the company as it looks to keep evolving its main analytics offering. Back in July, the company announced an integration with AWS SageMaker to make it easier for its users to create machine learning models that can make business recommendations. Also this year, Periscope added support for the Python and R programming languages, enabling its users to perform more complex statistical analyses and visualize the results of the analysis in more useful ways.
