Air Bud learning new tricks in hybrid cloud for streaming entertainment

The explosion of streaming entertainment allows the public to view unprecedented amounts of content easier than ever, but it also necessitates more backups and, subsequently, costlier methods of storing data. For the company behind the popular “Air Bud” films, Air Bud Entertainment, storing and maintaining media assets has led to a hybrid computing strategy with secondary storage provider Cohesity Inc. at the core.

“I definitely use Cohesity for our backups. They are a lifesaver,” said Tyson Clark (pictured), technical director at Air Bud Entertainment. “Tape backup just wasn’t cutting it for us. We were generating way too much data. Cohesity has allowed us to backup to that and then pass it off to the cloud for archival.”

Clark spoke with John Walls (@JohnWalls21), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Lauren Cooney (@lcooney), during AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas. They discussed asset backups, rendering, and maximizing storage options. (* Disclosure below.)

Scaling assets in the cloud

The cloud has become increasingly enticing to Clark as it evolves for secure, scalable and cost-effective solutions.

“I’m trying to find a solution that will let me scale out my render farm on-demand instantly… going up to who knows how many cores just to get that render through, so we can get our shots done in time,” Clark said.

Clark is also working on converting digital assets to higher-quality 4K content. He’s seeking ways to simplify and accelerate the complicated process of content conversion.

“A lot of people think you flip the switch, it’s easy, but that means we have four times the amount of data. It takes twice as long to render. It takes four times longer to move things around,” Clark stated.

In that vein, Clark is interested in 5G networking and hybrid cloud solutions to manage the quadrupling storage. The biggest bottleneck is data, whose requirements Clark said have exploded from 10 terabytes to petabytes.

“We’ve got to get four times more of our Isilon; we’ve got to get four times of our Qumulo. We also have to get four times more of our Cohesity, and that’s the main part,” said Clark of his hybrid cloud solutions across Hewlett Packard’s Isilon for unstructured data, Qumulo for hybrid cloud management, and Cohesity for backup.
