HPE extends InfoSight cross-platform and adds new storage capabilities

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.’s servers and systems just got smarter.

The company just announced that its cloud-based artificial intelligence management tool — InfoSight — would add machine learning capabilities that include cross-stack recommendations for Nimble Storage, an AI-driven resource planner to optimize workload placement and performance insights for HPE 3PAR’s systems and software for data storage.

“This isn’t AI marketing,” said Patrick Osborne (pictured), vice president and general manager of big data and secondary storage at HPE. “We’re actually applying these techniques and machine learning within our install base and our fleet, which is growing larger as we extend support from our platforms, that actually make people’s’ lives easier.”

Osborne spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at theCUBE’s studio in Boston, Massachusetts, to discuss recent HPE announcements involving AI, multicloud, containers, flash memory and secondary storage. (* Disclosure below.)

Powerful recommendation engine

The addition of cross-stack recommendations is designed to help monitor virtualized environments and minimize critical outages. “Our point of view is around intelligent storage and intelligent data management,” Osborne said. “We’re getting deeper AI-driven recommendation engines.”

In addition to enhancements for InfoSight, HPE also announced an expansion of service capabilities and global reach for Cloud Volumes, its multicloud storage service for Amazon Web Services Inc. and Microsoft Azure. The service will become available in the United Kingdom and Ireland next year and will also include support for Docker and Kubernetes container platforms.

“This is a big win for a lot of customers that want to do continuous improvement, continuous development and use those containerized frameworks,” Osborne said.

The company has also focused on a new class of storage it calls Memory-Driven Flash, built with storage-class memory and non-volatile memory express. The new class of storage will be available for HPE 3PAR in December and for HPE Nimble next year.

HPE is also strengthening its partnership with hyperconverged secondary storage solutions provider Cohesity Inc. The expanded resell agreement will provide customers with the ability to consolidate backup and secondary data over the hybrid cloud.

“We are doing a pretty big amplification of our partnership in an OEM relationship with Cohesity,” Osborne said. “In general, this secondary storage market is hot, and we’re making some bets in our ecosystem right now.”
