Google to update G Suite apps with Material Design theme

Google LLC’s G Suite web apps are getting a shiny new makeover along the lines of its Material Design theme.

The update, affecting Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Sites, will be rolled out to G Suite Basic, G Suite Business, G Suite Enterprise, G Suite for Education, G Suite Enterprise for Education and G Suite for Nonprofits users over the next few weeks.

Material Design is a set of visual principles first defined by Google Design that specify how objects, colors, placement and movement should work together to make visual interfaces more productive and portable across platforms.

The new look and feel of G Suite’s web apps won’t affect their functions, but users may be pleased with the new aesthetics, including different interface fonts, slightly revised controls and some new iconography. There are also some fresh new colors scattered around the apps’ interfaces.

Google had previously applied its Material Design theme to the Android versions of services, including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.

Google said the update will roll out gradually and that all G Suite users can expect to see the changes by the end of February. The changes will be enabled by default. Expect to see “similar changes across other G Suite applications in the future,” Google said.

When Google updates G Suite, it’s usually only a matter of time before those changes are rolled out to consumers who use the free versions of those apps, so it probably won’t be long until everyone gets to see the Material Design theme in action.
