Sonos and Ikea debut new connected lamp and bookshelf speakers

Sonos Inc. today joined with famed Swedish flat-pack furniture maker Ikea to debut two new WiFi-connected speakers in the forms of a lamp and a bookshelf.

The Ikea Symfonisk collection speakers debuted at an Italian design show on Monday and are being pitched as integrating technology with home furnishing products so as to “improve life at home.”

Both the lamp and the bookshelf include Sonos speakers and connection technology, which allows them to be paired with other Sonos speakers as well as operated via Sonos’ existing app.

Although they’re not smart home speakers in a traditional sense — there is no voice commands nor direct support for Alexa or Google Home — by pairing with the Sonos app the speakers can do things such as stream music.

The lamp and bookshelf do offer smart assistant support indirectly, however. The Sonos app is compatible with both Alexa and Siri, the latter via Apple devices.

Audio quality is said to be better than existing smart home devices on the market such as the Amazon Echo and Google Home, but that bar was not a high one either.

That said, the speakers can be combined in multiple units or with other Sonos connected speakers to provide an improved audio experience including as part of the Dolby 5.1 setup.

The speakers come in black or white with each having one tweeter, one midwoofer and two digital amplifiers.

In a twist, the speakers can be customized somewhat with the power on and off switch able to be removed and replaced with switches of different colors.

Hinting that this may be the start of a long relationship and possibly more products to come, Tad Toulis, vice president of design at Sonos said in a statement that the partnership was about shared passion, values and knowledge.

“Ikea and Sonos recognize the importance of great sound and its potential to positively affect life at home for the many people,” Toulis said. “We set out to create products neither of us would or could develop independently. To this end, since music and light are both instrumental in creating a sense of place, we developed a product that can deliver both.”

The bookshelf speaker has a list price of $99 while the lamp is listed at $179 with both going on sale latter this year.
