MongoDB’s Atlas managed database deepens integration with Google Cloud

Google LLC is stepping up its partnership with database company MongoDB Inc., making that company’s managed database service available today on its cloud platform.

MongoDB Atlas, as the service is called, is a fully managed cloud version of the company’s popular NoSQL database launched in 2016 that eliminates most of the heavy lifting involved in getting it up and running. Designed for companies that simply want the database to do what it’s supposed to do, it handles all the complexity involved with deploying, managing and healing database deployments.

For example, the service provides the ability to allocate cloud resources quickly for a deployment using a streamlined “one-click provisioning” mechanism, and then have the database automatically set itself up based on predefined rules. Users can customize pretty much everything, from the system’s sharding or partitioning settings to the number of backups that are kept on hand.

By integrating MongoDB Atlas with Google Cloud, customers gain benefits such as unified billing, with the costs of the database included within a single bill alongside all of the other Google services they use. The service also integrates with Google’s Cloud Key Management Service, helping users protect their information stored on the database.

Another benefit is scale, since MongoDB Atlas is available across 20 cloud regions, which means lower latency for both database reads and writes.

Google highlighted a bunch of customers that have been using the new, tightly integrated version of MongoDB Atlas on its cloud in beta. They include Auto Trader U.K., a website for buying and selling used cars, that uses the database to keep its listings up to date in real-time.

“MongoDB Atlas running on GCP has unlocked massive potential in our architecture through agility in scaling and resource management, seamless multi-region clusters, and premium monitoring as standard,” Mohsin Patel, principal database engineer at Auto Trader U.K., said in a statement. “We have also significantly reduced complexity, allowing our developers to focus on the innovation that drives our products rather than the infrastructure it sits on.”

MongoDB Atlas is available in the Google Cloud Marketplace now.
