An internal memo that circulated around the offices of Google LLC last week claims that the company discriminated against a pregnant woman.
The memo, titled, “I’m Not Returning to Google After Maternity Leave, and Here is Why,” was seen by more than 10,000 Google staffers before it found itself on other message boards. On Monday it was published in full by Motherboard.
“I am sharing this statement because I hope it inform needed change in how Google handles discrimination, harassment and retaliation,” the memo began. “This is a long read, but the details are important in understanding the often drawn-out, isolating and painful experience of victims of discrimination, harassment and retaliation.”
In 2,300 words, the person explained that she had done well at the company, promoted to manage a team and looking at further promotion. She then said she reported her manager to HR after she made some remarks about a pregnant woman and her emotional state.
“Almost immediately upon my discussions with HR, my manager’s demeanor towards me changed, and drastically,” she wrote. “I endured months of angry chats and emails, vetoed projects, her ignoring me during in-person encounters, and public shaming.”
It seems the woman then became pregnant herself, but she was told that she shouldn’t manage anyone on that team until she came back from her maternity leave. If she did, she claimed she was told, she might “stress the team” or “rock the boat.”
She also claimed that she was unwell during her pregnancy and asked that she might have some bedrest, only for her manager to tell her rest wouldn’t help the situation. “My manager then emphasized in this same meeting that a management role was no longer guaranteed upon my return from maternity leave, and that she supported my interviewing for other roles at Google,” wrote the woman.
“We prohibit retaliation in the workplace and publicly share our very clear policy,” Google responded in a statement. “To make sure that no complaint raised goes unheard at Google, we give employees multiple channels to report concerns, including anonymously, and investigate all allegations of retaliation.”
