DataStax Inc., a heavily funded startup offering a commercial version of the Cassandra database, today announced that it has acquired The Last Pickle, a consultancy specializing in helping enterprises deploy Cassandra.
The deal’s financial terms were not disclosed.
Cassandra, or Apache Cassandra by its full name, is an open-source NoSQL database designed to store large volumes of information with a low risk of outages. The system was originally created by Facebook Inc. in 2008 and has since become one of the industry’s most widely used NoSQL databases.
The Last Pickle launched in 2012 to assist companies with implementing Cassandra in their environments. The New Zealand-based firm lists major brands such as Spotify AB, T-Mobile USA Inc. and AT&T Inc. among its clients.
The Last Pickle is DataStax’s first acquisition since Google LLC veteran Chet Kapoor took over as chief executive last October. Kapoor was a vice president at the search giant for three years and earlier served as the CEO of Apigee Inc., which Google bought in 2016 for $625 million.
DataStax can draw on The Last Pickle’s expertise to help enterprise customers deploy its paid version of Cassandra. Additionally, the consultancy has developed a number of open-source tools for managing the database that DataStax will “productize” in the wake of the deal, TechCrunch reported. The Last Pickle’s contributions to the open source ecosystem include the tlp-stress performance optimization tool, the Reaper database repair engine and a Cassandra backup system called Medusa.
“DataStax and The Last Pickle are both at the forefront of Cassandra innovation,” Kapoor said in a statement. “By joining forces, we strengthen our commitment to NoSQL, the open source Cassandra community, products, and innovation.”
DataStax has raised $190 million in funding to date from investors such as Kleiner Perkins and Meritech Capital. The startup claims more than 400 enterprise customers, including Cisco Systems Inc., Sony Corp. and Macy’s Inc.
