Google Cloud adds a new region in Las Vegas

Google LLC’s public cloud infrastructure platform is expanding its reach with the availability of a new region in Las Vegas.

The new region announced today is Google’s fourth in the western United States and seventh nationwide.

“Now open to Google Cloud customers, the Las Vegas region provides you with the speed and availability you need to innovate faster and build high-performing applications that cater to the needs of nearby end users,” Google Cloud Platform product manager Julia Broodney said in a blog post.

Google Cloud’s regions relate to a specific geographical location where customers can host their cloud computing resources. Each region is home to at least one availability zone, but in the case of Las Vegas, Google has made three zones available.

Each of the zones has its own, separate software, power, cooling, network and security infrastructure, and provides a large pool of compute and storage resources for customers, ensuring continued availability of Google’s cloud services, Broodney said. The zones are connected by a low latency, high-bandwidth network, in addition to Google’s own private connection for those who need greater privacy.

Broodney said the new zone would provide greater capacity for its local customers. They include Aristocrat Technologies Australia Pty Ltd., which sells slot machines and other games to casinos.

James Alverez, chief information officer of the gaming company Aristocrat, said Google’s cloud platform enables important outcomes for the company.

“First the ability to securely, consistently and immediately enable and disable game development platforms; and second, our ability to expand and contract our infrastructure based on demand,” Alverez said. “Both of these capabilities allow us to flex our technology to fully support the demands of our customers and our business. The Las Vegas region gives us the opportunity to more directly engage Google Cloud services and take advantage of an entry point into the network.”

Google now offers 23 cloud regions with 70 availability zones across 16 countries, and is planning to launch yet more regions in Jakarta and in Warsaw later this year.
