Box integrates with more Google cloud services

Box Inc. said today it’s expanding its partnership with Google LLC and its integrations with G Suite and Google Cloud services.

The company said it plans to use Google Cloud for data storage and machine learning integrations with its Box Skills software framework, and will soon add support for Google Authenticator to enable some new enhancements to its single-sign-on service.

Box Skills is a software framework that uses machine learning to make video, audio, image and other files more useful on its content management service. Launched in 2018, it gives Box customers the ability to perform tasks on content such as computer vision for image analysis, plus video indexing and sentiment analysis from audio using machine learning technologies.

Box said it plans to offer access to Google’s Document AI service as part of the Box Skills offering to improve its data processing capabilities.

The company will also add some single-sign-on enhancements to make it easier for its users to set identity configurations. As part of this, Box will add support for Google Authenticator as well as time-limited one-time passwords.

In addition, Box will expand its integration with Google’s G Suite productivity tools to make life easier for companies that use both services. The new integration features include consistent privacy controls and access settings for Box and G Suite, reciprocal transfers for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides between Box and Google Drive, and a new add-on for G Suite that enables users to create a document in G Suite and automatically save it to Box.

Box and Google first began integrating their products in 2016 by allowing users to create, edit and collaborate on G Suite files from within the Box interface, while benefiting from Box’s compliance and security capabilities. Box also integrates with Gmail, so it’s possible to download and attach files to and from Box without leaving Google’s email service.

“Google Cloud is an incredibly important partner as we innovate and scale to bring secure collaboration to our customers globally, and we’re excited to continue making the combination of Box and G Suite as intuitive and seamless as possible for our customers,” said Box Chief Executive Aaron Levie.

Box said the new integrations with G Suite will be made available to customers at no additional charge by the fourth quarter.
