Automated cybersecurity startup Adaptive Shield exits stealth

Cybersecurity startup A.S. Adaptive Shield Ltd. emerged from stealth mode today armed with $4 million in a seed funding round from Vertex Ventures Israel.

Adaptive Shield sells technology that automates security for commonly used software-as-a-service applications. It works by proactively seeking out and fixing misconfigurations in the global settings and user privileges of SaaS platforms such as Box, Dropbox, Office 365, Salesforce, Zoom and Slack that which could create a security risk.

The Adaptive Shield platform, which the company says can be deployed in just five minutes, also provides continuous monitoring and alerts to protect against any changes to those settings that might create new vulnerabilities.

The company explained that SaaS misconfiguration errors can be extremely costly, citing the Verizon 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report that says they account for approximately one in three security breaches. Such errors can result in databases and file systems accidentally being exposed on a cloud service, leaving the enterprises that deploy them vulnerable to risks such as corporate espionage and data theft.

Adaptive Shield Chief Executive Maor Bin said that although most SaaS apps have their own security configuration controls built in, it’s the responsibility of the companies that use them to ensure that these are set up correctly. But that can be problematic when companies are using dozens of apps at once, as is commonplace today.

“Security teams are overwhelmed trying to manage thousands of settings across all their apps,” Bin said. “Our mission is to give security teams one common platform to manage all their SaaS app security.”

Adaptive Shield’s platform provides continuous security for all of a company’s SaaS-based apps while running in the background to ensure no disruption to their business operations. The platform also provides compliance evaluation and risk scoring against industry frameworks such as NIST, SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI DSS for each SaaS app used.

“Every enterprise today is heavily using SaaS services without addressing the associated and ever-changing security risks,” said Emanuel Timor, a general partner at Vertex Ventures Israel. “We are impressed by the vision Adaptive Shield has to elegantly solve this complex problem and by the level of interest and fast adoption of its solution by customers.”

Adaptive Shield said its SaaS security platform is available now and is offering enterprises a free trial before they buy.
