Ionir exits stealth with the promise of instant data mobility for Kubernetes apps

Container-based storage and data management provider Ionir is exiting stealth mode today with a new platform it says can better support Kubernetes workloads in private cloud and multicloud deployments.

The company is backed by an $11 million Series A funding round led by Jerusalem Venture Partners, with participation from C5 Capital.

Ionir has built a cloud-native, software-defined storage and data management platform for Kubernetes applications that runs entirely in the cloud. It says its platform provides a “Data Teleport” capability that enables instant data mobility for persistent storage volumes.

The platform makes it possible for container-based applications to be copied and moved instantly between Kubernetes clusters, Ionir said. Containers are used to host the components of modern software applications that can run on any computing infrastructure, while Kubernetes is the open-source software that’s used to manage them.

With Ionir, companies can build a more seamless data layer together with a common set of data management workflows that are independent of the underlying cloud or infrastructure that their applications run on. Ionir says this is important because, although adoption of Kubernetes is growing, most companies are still struggling to accommodate it with traditional storage solutions that were built to support older legacy applications.

The problem is that containers were originally designed for transient workloads to support DevOps workflows rather than enterprise applications that need long-term persistent storage. As a result, legacy storage systems are unable to provide data mobility, which leads to infrastructure silos and operational challenges in private cloud and multicloud deployments, as applications cannot access the data they need quickly enough.

Ionir says it solves this challenge by unifying infrastructure environments into a single data cloud, with the result being instant and seamless application and data mobility.

“With Data Teleport, persistent volumes can be moved or copied between Kubernetes clusters and clouds in under 40 seconds independent of the size of the volume or the amount of data involved,” said Ionir Chief Executive Jacob Cherian. “For example, in a production/development hybrid deployment, developers will no longer have to wait for hours or days for volumes to be copied to get access to the latest data. With instant mobility data can be refreshed in under a minute accelerating development processes and the delivery of new capabilities.”

Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller told SiliconANGLE that it remains challenging for enterprises to provide the relevant data they need to operate.

“It’s not trivial especially when it comes to the operational data,” he said. “It’s good to see startup innovation and VC capital joining the race to meet these challenges. The next months will show if Ionir can deliver on its roadmap commitment and customer adoption and growth.”
