Commvault launches Metallic Cloud Storage Service to provide air-gapped backup

Data protection and management provider Commvault Systems Inc. today launched Metallic Cloud Storage Service, a service designed to simplify backup operations for enterprises.

The typical company’s backup environment consists of several different components. One of those components is the so-called backup target, the infrastructure on which standby copies of data are stored. Metallic Cloud Storage Service provides a cloud-based backup target where companies can store their information without having to maintain the underlying infrastructure.

The offering comes integrated with two of Commvault’s existing products. The first is Commvault Backup and Recovery, a software platform for ensuring the availability of data kept inside containers and virtualized applications. The other is HyperScale X, an on-premise data protection appliance that organizations can use to store backup copies of their records.

Commvault says Metallic Cloud Storage Service’s integration with its existing products will make easier for customers to start harnessing the public cloud in their backup operations. “Having simple, direct access to cloud storage as a primary or secondary backup target allows us to facilitate our customers’ journeys to the cloud, whether at the beginning or already on their way,” said Manoj Nair, a general manager with Commvault.

Another benefit Commvault promises is improved protection against threats such as ransomware. A worst-case scenario in ransomware attacks is hackers encrypting both the main copy of a company’s business information and the backups, which makes it much harder to recover from attacks. Metallic Cloud Storage Service stores backups in the public cloud separately from a company’s on-premise infrastructure, which Commvault says facilitates “airgapping” that lowers the risk of such a scenario materializing.

Metallic Cloud Storage is generally available now. The launch comes about a month after Commvault introduced Commvault Disaster Recovery, a tool that makes it possible to quickly restore backup copies of data when the original becomes unavailable because of ransomware or an outage.
