Sternum gives the enterprise greater visibility into IoT network security with advanced detection

Sternum Ltd., an Israeli “internet of things” embedded device cybersecurity startup, today announced the launch of its new platform dubbed Advanced Detection System, an agentless data analytics platform that can be seamlessly embedded into a wide array of devices.

With ADS, companies can detect and react to attacks in real-time using superior analytics capability with a highly scalable endpoint cybersecurity solution that prevents attacks and provides ongoing visibility and monitoring. It does this by running on the device itself, embedding in the device software, and analyzing data in real-time.

According to Sternum, 40 billion IoT devices are predicted to be in use by 2025, yet until now, manufacturers have had to rely mostly on agent-based solutions that are resource-heavy. This means that devices themselves burn a great deal of energy to collect and send data, spending much of their own battery and bandwidth.

Sternum’s solution breaks from this mold to bring a different approach with a design that can be easily be injected into the device’s code and onto the network. The solution can easily detect all suspicious activity and attempts to breach a device, as well as further learn insights about a device’s internal operations, software functions and third-party code.

“Until now, original equipment manufacturers have been largely unable to monitor and gain intimate and real-time visibility into their distributed IoT devices, leaving manufacturers with too many blind spots and unable to respond to pending threats,” said Natali Tshuva, Sternum’s co-founder and chief executive.

Thanks to its design, with ADS operating within the device’s code itself, the solution can detect not only software bugs but also flaws and vulnerabilities, common in unmanaged Bluetooth-capable devices, that affect device security.

“Manufacturers understand that device analysis is only as good as the data they are able to obtain, which is why we are launching a first-of-its-kind solution that unlocks access to hidden data points and creates new insight,” Tshuva said. “Comprehensive visibility from within embedded IoT devices ensures that OEMs are immediately alerted to exploitation attempts, security flaws, and much more.”

According to the market analysis website Statista, the IoT technology market reached $100 billion in revenue for the first time in 2017, and forecasts suggest that this figure will grow to around $1.6 trillion by 2025.

The marketplace is dominated by tiny devices, which can be sensors attached to anything from consumer devices such as cars, toasters and refrigerators to industrial devices such as manufacturing equipment in warehouses, robots, auto-welders and buildings to tablets and smartphones and other mobile devices on enterprise campuses.

Sternum recently secured $6.5 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to $10 million to date since its founding in 2018. Sternum has recently also partnered with public enterprises, including Telit IoT Platforms LLC, as well as medical device manufacturers.
