Replicated raises $25M to build better on-premises software
Replicated Inc., a startup whose technology is used by major software makers such as UiPath Inc. to power their on-premises products, has picked up $25 million in fresh funding.
Two Sigma Ventures led the round with participation from existing backers. The investment was announced today.
Enterprise software is increasingly delivered via the cloud rather than as a traditional executable file that customers need to install on their infrastructure. However, there are still many scenarios where organizations opt for on-premises applications because of considerations such as security. As a result, “the on-prem software market is four times larger than the SaaS market,” said Replicated Chief Executive Officer Grant Miller.
The five-year-old startup’s software platform reduces the amount of work it takes to create an on-premises version of an enterprise application. Normally, the process can take months because software makers need to create auxiliary components such as an installer for setting up their service on the customer’s hardware. Replicated provides these auxiliary components in a ready-made form to save companies the hassle.
The startup’s platform includes an installation engine that can set up an application on on-premises infrastructure or in the public cloud. Kubernetes serves as the software foundation on which applications packaged with Replicated are deployed. If the container framework isn’t set up in the customer’s environment, Replicated embeds it together with the application.
“Everyday we speak with software vendors of all sizes who are already leveraging (or planning to) Kubernetes as the substrate for delivering their application into enterprise environments as private instances,” Miller wrote in a blog post. “The common theme is that they have independently concluded that Kubernetes will provide them with the basic platform needed to create a fuller, more automated, on-prem software experience for their customers.”
Also included in Replicated’s platform is an administrator console that a software firm’s customers can use to manage deployments. It provides access to features for performing backups, patching and other common maintenance tasks. Additionally, software makers can add in monitoring dashboards that detect when an application may be encountering technical issues.
It’s a feature set that has helped Replicated double the size of its customer base over the past year. Besides UiPath, its user base includes HashiCorp Inc., code security unicorn Snyk Ltd., Puppet Inc. and a long list of others. Replicated says that software products powered by its platform are used by half of the Fortune 100.
Looking ahead, the startup has plans to accelerate its feature development and hiring roadmaps. The $25 million funding round announced today brings Replicated’s total capital raised so far to $31.5 million.
