Codefresh brings better monitoring to ‘GitOps’ workflows

Codefresh Inc. today introduced a set of capabilities that will enable software teams to do a more effective job of tracking and controlling the code they deploy on their companies’ infrastructure.

In recent years, many software teams have shifted from releasing new code every few weeks or months to releasing updates once a day or more. The ability to track the status of updates reliably is important for identifying potential bugs. The faster a developer can determine something is wrong with the code they just deployed, the lower the risk of downtime becomes for the business users who rely on their software.

Codefresh provides a so-called CI/CD platform, for continuous integration and continuous deployment, that is used by software teams to manage the process of rolling out their code. With the enhancements announced today, Codefresh has improved the platform’s interface to provide a more thorough view of code releases. Developers can now see a detailed summary of every update made to an application including which member of the team uploaded it, what parts of the application the update modified and if it may have caused any technical issues for users.

If they spot a technical issue, developers can use a rollback option built into the interface to quickly reverse the code change. This feature is aimed at facilitating faster remediation in situations when an update causes application malfunctions such as a performance slowdown.

For software teams in charge of more than application, Codefresh has added  “aggregate views” that make it possible to track the status of code updates across multiple software projects in one place. Projects are organized into a list that, next to every entry, shows the most recent code change made to that particular service, when it was released and who released it. Developers can also gain insight whether the update was successful.

The features, Codefresh says, are aimed not just at easing update monitoring but also helping software teams make their workflows more automated. As part of a new trend dubbed GitOps, companies are working to synchronize their infrastructure to developers’ workflow so that when an application is updated, the infrastructure on which it runs is automatically reconfigured to accommodate the change. The benefits include less work for administrators and faster update deployment times.

To pull off such a high level of automation, companies need the ability to monitor both their applications and their infrastructure closely to make sure every component is performing its task as expected. That’s where Codefresh promises to help with its new monitoring capabilities.

The startup today also introduced new automation features to help with other aspects of application projects. The features will enable developers to have Codefresh, for example, run reliability tests on a code change after deployment and undo the change if it’s found to contain errors. The platform now also makes it easier to handle the deployment of updates across infrastructure located in multiple regions.

Founded in 2014, Codefresh is backed by more than $40 million in funding from investors that include Microsoft Corp.’s M12 fund and Shasta Ventures.
