Oppo reveals new mobile tethered smartglasses with gesture control

Chinese consumer electronics company Oppo revealed sleek new futuristic augmented reality glasses at its Inno Day conference Tuesday that can be tethered to a mobile device.

The smartglasses, which are slated to arrive next year, will feature time-of-flight sensors that can measure distances and will use simultaneous localization and mapping or SLAM algorithms to gauge the area around the person in real time and position 3D holograms in their vision.

The glasses will also feature hand tracking, gesture controls and voice recognition. The company claimed the design will allow users to watch videos as if they were being watched at eyeline on a 90-meter screen.

The “birdbath” optics inside of the design uses an organic light-emitting diode display that provides the AR experience. It’s what provides the improved image contrast, brightness and a wide field of view, which overlays the user’s vision.

Plus, it can be connected to the Oppo Find X2 mobile phone via a Universal Serial Bus Type-C cable for a performance boost, but the company did not speak to what kind of power the glasses will have without being connected through a cable.

The new glasses will feature a split design that Oppo claims will allow them to be 75% lighter than its first concept and boosted its performance by 40%, thanks to the USB tether. The company has also introduced better nose supports, which gives it a more comfortable fit for most faces.

The glasses themselves use a pair of binocular fisheye cameras that can track hands in milliseconds using predefined gestures, so even slight finger movements can be used to control the device.

The company has also already revealed some of its early-stage content, including a multiplayer online battle arena video game, a tower defense game, an English language learning app, a video viewing app from iQIYI and a home furniture app from online retailer JD.com Inc.

Oppo plans to launch a developer program next year for the smartglasses as well, which will include a recruitment sweep for AR content partners, developer support programs and hackathons in China. A software development kit and application programming interface will also be released sometime in 2021 to jumpstart the developer ecosystem before the retail push.
