Rubrik supercharges database backups with Andes 5.3

Rubrik Inc. has introduced a new release of its cloud data protection platform that backs up databases up to 10 times faster than before in some cases, while providing better integrations with the major public clouds.

Andes 5.3, announced Thursday afternoon, brings a set of broad under-the-hood performance optimizations. Rubrik says that the enhancements allow the platform to back up Microsoft SQL databases 10 times faster than before while doubling the speed of Oracle database backups, to 1 gigabyte per second.

Oracle customers also have access to a new “Recovery Validation” feature they can use to verify that their backup copies are usable and can be quickly spun up if needed.

Rubrik is promising to speed up other parts of the data protection workflows, too. When recovering backup copies of network-attached storage workloads, companies can expect three times better performance than before. For NetApp Inc. customers, meanwhile, Rubrik is promising a twofold speedup in file scans.

File scanning is the process wherein a data protection platform checks what records in a system it needs to back up. The faster it can be performed, the faster the overall backup workflow can be carried out.

Performance wasn’t Rubrik’s only priority with Andes 5.3. The release adds the ability to back up and recover cloud instances, files and SAP HANA databases on Google Cloud, as well as deployments of the VMware Cloud on AWS solution. Another addition for AWS users: the ability to archive infrequently used files in the Amazon.com Inc. subsidiary’s Glacier and Deep Glacier low-cost data storage services.

Andes is one of the several products Rubrik offers as part of its data protection portfolio. Another is Polaris Sonar, a cloud service that helps organizations track sensitive information such as customer records that they keep in their systems. Polar Solar is being upgraded with new features for spotting sensitive files that don’t have access restrictions set up and files containing sensitive data that have not been accessed in a while.

Rubrik says more than 2,700 organizations use its products worldwide including multiple Fortune 500 firms.
