Document-oriented database company MongoDB Inc. said today that a new service called Realm Sync is now generally available to all customers.
Realm Sync is a fully managed service that lets users synchronize their data between its MongoDB Atlas and MongoDB Realm databases. MongoDB Atlas is a cloud database that’s popular with developers thanks to its simple nature and its ability to store many different types of data. Meanwhile, MongoDB Realm is a serverless database for mobile applications that helps ensure those apps don’t drain the battery life or hog the network data of the device they run on.
MongoDB built the Realm database after acquiring namesake startup Realm for $39 million in April 2019. At the time, it said Realm was already one of the most popular mobile databases around, used at companies such as Amazon.com Inc., Netflix Inc. and Google LLC.
With Realm Sync, it’s possible to synchronize data between the Realm mobile client and MongoDB Atlas with minimal latency, meaning information can be shared more seamlessly among different mobile devices.
MongoDB said Realm Sync helps developers capture data from any mobile device and then process and analyze it, or combine it with other data sets in the cloud. The transformed data can then be sent back to the device, which makes it possible to build more responsive applications with superior offline functions, the company said.
“Applications should work offline regardless of the strength of the signal, be reactive to changes and show that data is synced in real-time across multiple users, providing a seamless experience when users move between devices,” said William Fellows, an analyst with 451 Research Inc. “This is where Realm Sync comes in with its support for real-time sync data.”
“Mobile platforms need data synchronization to work, and that is what MongoDB has achieved with Realm Sync,” said analyst Holger Mueller of Constellation Research Inc. “Data synchronization is not trivial as there are important considerations such as battery power, bandwidth and other performance impacts.”
MongoDB said MongoDB Atlas is now used by more than 20,000 customers and is available in 79 cloud computing regions across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
