Commvault expands Metallic to Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Cloud

Data management and backup provider Commvault Systems Inc. is celebrating its 25th anniversary today by expanding its Metallic software-as-a-service backup and recovery portfolio to cover all three of Microsoft Corp.’s enterprise cloud services.

In addition, it announced a new Intelligent Data Services Platform for managing, securing, analyzing and ensuring data meets customer’s governance requirements.

Metallic is a data protection service built for midmarket customers that was launched in October 2019. Delivered via the cloud on a subscription basis, it enables customers to back up critical data to the Metallic cloud. One of its key advantages is that it’s easier to deploy than traditional backup services, Commvault says.

Metallic works on external cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, as well as on-premises servers. Additionally, customers can choose to backup their data in multiple locations.

Earlier editions of Metallic have enabled customers to back up their Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud data, and today the company said it’s expanding the portfolio with the launch of Metallic Dynamics 365, to provide backup for Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Cloud. It comes after the company debuted HyperScale X for Metallic last year, which enables a Commvault-branded appliance or a validated reference design to operate as an on-premises backup target for hybrid cloud workloads protected by Metallic.

“Dynamics is one of the fastest-growing SaaS applications from a business perspective,” Manoj Nair, general manager of Metallic at Commvault, said last week in an interview on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio. “There’s millions of users out there and it’s rapidly growing. We’re now proud to say we support all three Microsoft clouds, with Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics.”

Little was said about the new Intelligent Data Services Platform, other than it covers data management and protection, data security, data compliance and governance, data transformation and data insights.

Commvault said the new services are available as an integrated appliance, partner-managed or on a SaaS basis. The company stressed in its news release that its SaaS model has proven to be a big differentiator for the company and one of the main reasons for its recent success. In the company’s most recent quarterly financial report, it achieved record sales of $191.3 million, up 16% from the year prior.

“Customers need the simplicity and flexibility that SaaS enables,” Commvault Chief Executive Sanjay Mirchandani said in a statement. “By seamlessly integrating Commvault HyperScale X and Metallic, we offer customers what we call the ‘power of AND,’ the ability to leverage on-premises and SaaS, with a single integrated solution.”

Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Christophe Bertrand said it’s this ability that has enabled Commvault to stand out among a crowded field of competitors in the data management and backup space.

“I have said that 2020 was a breakout year for the company, and the recent financial performance is proof of that,” Bertand said. “Commvault has shown steady growth for the past 25 years, and its approach to the ‘business integrity gap’ and its focus on intelligent data management with new services makes it well-positioned to continue to lead the market.”
