HPE expands GreenLake services with Lighthouse to focus on cloud native
Searching for a cloud service takes more than just finding a platform to deploy your app. It takes a strong solution and other helpful features to make that happen, according to John Gromala (pictured), senior director of product management of HPE GreenLake Lighthouse at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.
“Think of it as a fully integrated, deploy at any place you want on your premises, at a co-location provider or at the edge, wherever you need,” Gromala said. “They’ll all inter-operate and work together, sharing data, running apps together, great capability for people to bring the Cloud where they want.”
Gromala spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the HPE Discover 2021 event. They discussed how Lighthouse supports HPE’s broader GreenLake strategy and plans, as well as the enterprise’s cloud native focus. (*Disclosure below.)
What are the benefits?
The system includes integrated control planes that are needed to run in a distributed fashion. It’s a true distributed cloud that’s intended to run at any client location, according to Gromala.
“It connects back to GreenLake Central and our GreenLake cloud operations team to run any cloud services that they want. So you get the benefit of running those workloads wherever you need but with that centralized control that people want in terms of how they run their clouds,” he said.
Managing the workloads is easier as the provider can handle the firmware and software updates, according to Gromala. “All of those deployments are automated in nature so that people don’t have to worry about them,” he added.
With everything run through GreenLake Central, organizations now have the option of running a container as a service or a VM as a service on different platforms. “So think of it as a very flexible way to manage this, which is really what cloud native is all about,” Gromala said. “Having that flexibility to run those workloads wherever and however you need.”
The new system and services are expected to be available in July. However, more leading-edge solutions are expected to keep rolling out, according to Gromala, who said GreenLake has plans for edge-type offerings in the future.
“We’ll expand the portfolio over time with more of a mainstream version,” he said. “More technical or performance-oriented ones available soon thereafter.”
