HPE’s new data vision focuses on cloud data services
Last month, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. announced an expansion to HPE GreenLake by transforming HPE Storage into a cloud native, software-defined data services business.
HPE’s new data vision seeks to accelerate the digital transformation for its clients. Its first announcement was about Data Services Cloud Console, a software-as-a-service-based console designed to unify all data operations through a suite of cloud data services. The second announcement was about HPE Alletra, a cloud native data infrastructure managed with the Data Services Cloud Console.
“Together, with the Data Services platform, HPE GreenLake brings that cloud experience to our customers data across edge and on-premises environments and lays the foundation for our customers to shift from managing storage to managing data,” said Sandeep Singh (pictured, right), vice president of storage marketing at HPE.
Singh and Omer Asad (pictured, left), vice president and general manager of primary storage and data management services at HPE, spoke with Dave Vallente, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the HPE Discover event. They discussed HPE GreenLake, data-driven transformations, the cloud operating model and more. (*Disclosure below.)
A new era for HPE
The Data Services Cloud Console is designed to unify data operations to a series of cloud data services, according to Asad.
“What we have done is separated storage and data management and putting the strong suits of each of those together into this SaaS-delivered console for our customers,” Asad said. “Our customers with Data Services Cloud Console can manage the entire life cycle of their data — from deployment, upgrading, and optimizing it — from a single console, from anywhere in the world.”
The console is designed to streamline data management with cloud data services that enable access to data, and it allows for policy-based data protection. HPE’s goal is to deliver a 360 visibility of all of a customer’s data from anywhere.
With HPE Alletra, HPE is launching cloud native hardware infrastructure to power data from the edge, core and cloud, according to Asad.
“We’re announcing two models with this launch, HPE Alletra 9000; this is for our mission-critical workloads. It has its history and basis in HPE Primera; it comes with 100% availability guarantee,” he said.
The second Alletra, HPE Alletra 6000, is based on the company’s history of Nimble Storage Systems, which is intelligent, self-managing storage.
“These are for business-critical applications, especially for that mid-range of the storage market, optimizing price, performance and efficiency. Both of these systems are full NVMe storage, powered by our timeless capabilities with data in-place upgrades,” Asad stated.
Both options deliver a unified infrastructure and data management experience through the Data Services Cloud Console, he added.
HPE is looking to making the transition into the cloud as seamless as possible for its customers, taking away time-consuming processes originally needed to handle enterprise data.
“IT no longer has to go through complex startup and deployment processes,” Asad explained. “Now all you need to do is: these systems are shipped and delivered to the customer’s data center. Operational staff needs to rack and stack and then leave. Connect the power cable, connect the network cable, and the job’s done. From that point onwards, Data Services Console takes over. Where you can onboard these systems, you can provision these systems.”
