Watch live: Winners of the 2021 AWS Global Public Sector Partner Awards share success stories and technology secrets

Take 25 companies from 22 different countries. They work in finance, education, energy, government, healthcare and even outer space. Some are experts in data-led migration; others focus on nonprofit innovation. They include global corporations and single-office startups. These companies have many differences, but one critical commonality: They are all members of Amazon Web Services Inc. Global Public Sector ecosystem.

They’re also all winners in the 2021 AWS Global Public Sector Partner Awards.

On June 30 at noon ET, theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, will be hosting the 2021 awards ceremony live online. Open for global participation, the event includes one-on-one interviews with the award winners and their customers. Attendees will get insights into what makes these solutions stand out, as well as examples of real-life use cases. AWS rewards partners for customer obsession, high standards and resourcefulness

This year’s champions represent the top echelon of the 1,800-plus AWS Global Public Sector ecosystem. Aside from their technical innovations, winners are selected based on their positive impact as members of the AWS Partner Network, as well as how well their culture manifests the Amazon leadership principles. These are the axioms by which award winners act. Customer obsession is the number one trait, along with high standards, long-term vision and the ability to think big yet remain frugal.

“Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention. There are no extra points for growing headcount, budget size or fixed expense,” according to the leadership principles.

Resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention were qualities that kept organizations in good stead during 2020. As COVID-19 shook the world, the AWS Partner ecosystem turned its power of innovation onto solving the problems of the pandemic. Acknowledging this effort, 2020 sees a new award: the Best COVID-19 Solution.

“AWS was purposed to meet the new needs of our partners during the pandemic,” Sandy Carter, vice president of worldwide public sector partners and programs at Amazon Web Services Inc., told theCUBE. “The winner for the Best COVID-19 Solution accelerated and strengthened the ability of organizations across multiple healthcare systems to combat the COVID-19 outbreak by tracing the spread of the virus to accelerating production of critical medical supplies.”

That winner is Palantir Technologies Inc. The company leveraged the existing attributes of its Foundry platform to help healthcare organizations coordinate their COVID response faster and more effectively.

“By centralizing disparate data sources and harmonizing that data, Palantir allowed scientists to accelerate their patient research and improve their response to COVID-19,” Josh Harris, vice-president of Palantir, stated in a press release announcing the award. “Our software was designed to tackle the world’s hardest problems, and we are proud to have partnered with AWS to rise to the occasion during an unprecedented public health crisis.”

AWS’ Think Big for Small Business supports SMEs to meet their goals

Small and medium-sized enterprises and minority-owned business partners face challenges with skills enablement, marketing funding and sales engagement for business development in normal times. The pandemic made meeting these targets even harder. To help out, AWS created the Think Big for Small Business program for its public sector partners and added an award category for the partner who leveraged this program the best. Taking the award is the DLZP Group LLC, a woman and minority-owned Texas-based cloud technology company with less than 20 employees.

“DLZP Group achieved the Advanced Consulting Partner tier and used all of the program benefits provided to further their success in the public sector in 2020,” Carter said.

The program came at the “right time,” according to DLZP Group Managing Partner and President Lisa Brunet, who described how it helped the company get critical AWS certifications and meet its customer satisfaction goals despite its limited staff.

From fighting COVID to fighting bushfires, the award recipients are applying advanced technology to overcome both the specific challenges brought by 2020 and the broader challenges that the fast pivot to a digital economy have created for companies across the business spectrum.

“The advanced technology within Amazon Web Services enables us to deliver our solutions at worldwide scale and democratize our ethical AI/ML practices,” said Allan Waddell, co-chief executive officer and founder of Kablamo Pty. Ltd., which won the most innovative AI and ML solution category.

Kablamo’s platform, developed in response to Australia’s devastating bushfires in early 2020, uses advanced ML to identify areas at high risk for fires. In a statement to theCUBE, Waddell said Kablamo was “grateful for the global recognition this award brings and proud to represent the Australian tech industry in the fight to reduce, prevent and soon roll back the devastating-impact of environmental disasters like bushfires.”
