ExxonMobil accelerates information-sharing ability, saving thousands of EPC hours

When Exxon Mobil Corp. needed to improve its ability to share documents with its engineering, procurement and construction, or EPC, partners, it used technology and a partnership network to do so.

The company built its Digital Project Home platform on AWS cloud infrastructure, leading to new innovations in its EPC value chain. To help build the platform, ExxonMobil and AWS Professional Services worked with two AWS partners: Pariveda Solutions Inc., which supports DPH in production, and projekt202, which applies experience strategy and observational insights to the development of software for a better user experience.

Pariveda was recognized for its role in the project at this week’s 2021 AWS Global Public Sector Partner Awards, where it received the “Best Energy Solution” award.

“AWS really gave us an accelerated platform to really start diving into the innovative side of improving collaboration between ExxonMobil and their engineering, procurement and construction vendors,” said Alan Henson (pictured, left), senior principal at Pariveda.

Henson, along with Doug Priedeman (pictured, right), engineering management specialist at ExxonMobil, spoke with Natalie Erlich, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the 2021 AWS Global Public Sector Partner Awards. They discussed ExxonMobil’s Digital Home Project and innovations in its EPC value chain. (* Disclosure below.)

How Digital Home Project helps ExxonMobil save thousands of EPC hours

As a part of the project, Pariveda built an adaptable program that takes ExxonMobil’s changing client needs into consideration. This included building a system that takes any EPC end user into account, regardless of where around the world the EPC vendor is located.

“We wanted to build a solution that would adapt them quickly so they’re not constantly having to go back and build new customizations, new workflows that were specific to one entity or project versus another,” Henson said. “So, just by making it modular and flexible, we were able to already start to save costs.”

By streamlining the process, Digital Home Project makes it easier for the exchange of the thousands of documents that change hands on any particular project between ExxonMobil and its EPC partners.

“We’re talking thousands upon thousands of hours that we believe can be reduced and what that translates to — not only the ability to execute a project with a smaller team, but we are confident with better information in hand, we’ll make better decisions,” Priedeman concluded.
