Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. today officially announced its next Galaxy Unpacked event for Aug. 11, providing a broad hint in the title: “experience what’s about to unfold.”
Expected to be revealed during the event is the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Buds 2. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be virtual and streamed live online.
The new Galaxy Fold and Flip models are reported to have upgrades, including their CPU and cameras, but the form factor on each is not expected to change. They fold — that’s their entire thing. Unlike a standard flagship smartphone, how do you change a foldable phone? They could get bigger, or the bezel is smaller, but there’s not much that can be changed.
The one thing that could change is the price of the folding phones and speculation is hot coming into the Galaxy Unpacked event. SamMobile reported earlier this month that the cost of both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 could be up to 20% lower than the previous models.
Both are premium models with prices to match. The Galaxy Fold 2 debuted in the U.S. with a list price of $1,999, about $600 higher than the equivalent premium S model.
A 20% price cut would be welcomed but the phones are still arguably expensive for most people. Nearly $1,600 for the Galaxy Fold 3 is still $250 more expensive than the list price in the U.S. for a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung’s flagship phone.
A cut on the price of the Galaxy Flip 3 is arguably more notable than the previous model. The current Galaxy Flip model has a list price of $1,199.99, meaning that it could come down to $999.99. For many, however, that’s still an expensive phone.
As cute as the phone may be, the problem is that the Galaxy Flip appeals to a niche audience only. It’s the Android version of a Motorola StarTAC flip phone in the 2020s, but it’s no longer the 1990s. Novelty only goes so far.
Along with the new folding models, Samsung is expected to debut new Galaxy Watch models. Whether there will be one or two new models is open to speculation. Reports earlier this month had Samsing debuting two new models: the Galaxy Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Active, the latter a fitness-focused model.
The Galaxy Buds 2 are also expected to debut at the event.
Samsung Unpack August 2020 is being streamed online from 10 a.m. EDT Aug. 11 on the Samsung U.S. website.
