New 1Password ‘Psst!’ service offers secure item and password sharing

Cybersecurity and password service provider 1Password today announced a new feature that enables users to share items and passwords, including to non-1Password users, securely.

The new service is called Psst!, standing for Password Secure Sharing Tool. When sharing items, users will receive a unique link that they can provide to their desired recipients. Links can be made available for up to 30 days, after which they automatically expire. Users can also limit who is able to view the item shared by requiring recipients to verify their email addresses before accessing them.

Psst! is attempting to address insecure practices both in enterprises and among the broader public. A recent report from 1Password found that nearly two-thirds of information technology department and DevOps workers admit to reusing corporate secrets such as corporate credentials, application programming interface tokens, keys and certificates between projects. Some 36% of respondents said they also share secrets over insecure channels such as email, chat services, spreadsheets, or shared documents and text to increase productivity and speed.

In another survey focused on sharing in a family, 76% reported sharing passwords, some of which use insecure methods such as writing them down, sending via messaging, or sharing in a shared spreadsheet or document.

The announcement of the new service comes at a time of significant growth for 1Password over the last year, including raising $100 million in new funding from Accel, Sound Ventures and Skip Capital in July. The company is also celebrating a new milestone today with the announcement that it has now surpassed 100,000 business customers and 500 employees.

“Having the ability to share passwords and other credentials outside of a business or family has been one of our most highly requested features,” Jeff Shiner, chief executive officer of 1Password. “Crossing the 100,000 business customers mark is a clear indication that businesses understand the need to safeguard their passwords and other sensitive information online.”
