Dell adds new hybrid and archive nodes along with enhanced security for PowerScale

With the most recent flexibility and security enhancements to its lineup of PowerScale Storage systems, Dell Technologies Inc. is providing a wider range of options for scalability, cloud integration and mixed media data processing.

The recent introduction of Dell’s PowerScale hybrid H700 and H7000 nodes, coupled with A300 and A3000 archive nodes, provide more cores, memory and additional networking capabilities. It also completes the refresh of its Isilon storage line.

“With this launch, we are completing that portfolio with new hybrid and archive platforms,” said Kaushik Ghosh (pictured), director of product management for unstructured data solutions at Dell. “People have been really waiting for this product offering because now they can combine flash platforms that we launched last year with these hybrid platforms, and we can offer a solution that not only gives you that performance, but also the cost savings and value that PowerScale and Isilon can provide.”

Ghosh spoke with Lisa Martin, host of SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming video studio theCUBE. They discussed new features for data efficiency and added protection against ransomware attacks. (* Disclosure below.)

Inline efficiency for data

One of the key features accompanying Dell’s latest enhancements involves inline data efficiency. PowerScale’s OneFS operating system provides inline compression and deduplication, and this has been extended from all-flash offerings as part of the latest release.

“We have inline efficiency on our all-flash platforms, and now we are introducing it with hybrid and archive nodes,” Ghosh explained. “What that means is that when you set up a mixed cluster with all-flash and hybrid, when you tier the data down from flash to hybrid, the data does not have to be rehydrated. It stays compressed and duplicated; that’s one big advantage that you get.”

In addition to enhancements for PowerScale’s hybrid and archive nodes, Dell also announced new security capabilities designed to protect against ransomware attacks. These include features for detection and recovery through an update to Dell’s Superna cyber protection and recovery solution.

“We want to be able to detect quickly that an attack is happening and take corrective measures,” Ghosh said. “If an attack is happening, we detect it, and based on policies we can lock down a particular user profile or take other corrective actions.”
