Veritas, Manage Engine beef up ransomware protection for backups and endpoints

Two companies in the backup market are introducing new products intended specifically to address the scourge of ransomware attacks, which increased more than 150% in the first half of this year.

Veritas Technologies LLC today said it will release Veritas NetBackup Recovery Vault later this year. It describes the storage-as-a-service offering as a fully-managed data repository for Veritas NetBackup that features an air-gapped storage tier. NetBackup can be used to both manage backup and recovery and provision cloud-based storage from major cloud storage providers.

Recovery Vault will use an interface that is familiar to existing users and automates provisioning of cloud storage from different providers on an application-by-application basis.

Air-gapped cloud-based storage backs up data to a server that is not connected to the internet, thereby reducing the risk that ransomware and other threats can damage primary data stores or first-line backups. Veritas said it provides data encryption in transit and at rest and uses machine learning-based anomaly detection to identify unexpected changes to backups. Its Intelligent Cloud Policy Engine automatically detects and protects new workloads across all major clouds.

The announcement followed by one day the addition of anti-ransomware protection to the Desktop Central unified endpoint management product from ManageEngine, which is the enterprise information technology management division of Zoho Corp. The company also announced additional endpoint data loss prevention capabilities.

Unlike Veritas, ManageEngine doesn’t airgap storage but has added capabilities that aid in real-time ransomware detection, rapid data recovery and root cause analysis. New data loss prevention capabilities enable administrators to restrict the exchange of data to trusted emails, peripherals and cloud applications from within their UEM environment.

The features are available at a price of $40 per year, per license.
