Couchbase database model targets fundamental shift in digital architecture modernization

There is a key reason that companies are increasingly turning to enterprise solutions such as Couchbase Inc. for a combined relational and NoSQL database model. It’s because data is on the move.

“Whether you are in a subway, plane or ship, the data needs to come to you and be available,” said Ravi Mayuram (pictured), senior vice president of engineering and chief technology officer of Couchbase. “It comes down to the fact that the data needs to be where you are engaging with it. That is a fundamental shift in terms of how modern architecture needs to think when it comes to digital transformation. That’s the problem we are solving, this modernization of the data infrastructure.”

Mayuram spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the Couchbase ConnectONLINE event. They discussed the company’s combined SQL/NoSQL solution and lessons learned from the rise of an app-based economy. (* Disclosure below.)

Transactional support

Couchbase’s blend of SQL and NoSQL database technology was further reinforced this past summer with the release of Couchbase 7.0. Transactions in the latest offering are supported through Couchbase’s SQL-like language, along with new features that narrowed the gap between NoSQL and relational databases. This is part of Couchbase’s unique appeal, because data requires different types of processing, according to Mayuram.

“It’s like crude flowing through the system. You start all the way from petrol, and you can end up with Vaseline and rayon on the other end,” Mayuram said. “We’ve never treated data that way; that’s part of the problem. You have to recast it every time you want to look at the data. Without casting data to a different database, you can now do classic SQL queries, which is our magic. We are a NoSQL database, but we have a full functioning SQL.”

Not having to move data to different databases can enable robust functionality for many enterprises. It is a model exemplified by the smartphone, which served as a catalyst for the app-based economy.

Mayuram uses the simple example of his smartphone understanding how soon he needs to leave for a meeting. This requires that his device understands where is his, where he is going, current traffic conditions, has access to a calendar function, and is able to generate notifications.

“Five different systems have to come together at the same time,” Mayuram said. “They can because the data is in one place. I believe a database which gives you this optionality of doing multiple data processing on the same set of data will allow you to build a class of products which you have been struggling to build.”
