VMware brings its Cross-Cloud services for multicloud app development to AWS

Computing virtualization software firm VMware Inc. is pushing harder into multicloud with the expanded availability today of its Cross-Cloud services via Amazon Web Services Inc.’s cloud marketplace.

VMware launched its Cross-Cloud services at last month’s VMWorld 2021 conference. VMware Cross-Cloud is a group of integrated services including the VMware Tanzu application modernization tools and Carbon Black cybersecurity tools. With them, companies can build, run and secure applications that work on any cloud infrastructure using a common set of commands.

VMware Cross-Cloud services allow customers to pick and choose the services and cloud platforms they want to use and provide a common platform for building and deploying cloud-native apps, cloudlike infrastructure for on-premises applications and cross-cloud performance management tools. They also enable companies to adopt a common set of security policies for applications running on multiple clouds.

The company said today Cross-Cloud services including VMware Tanzu, Carbon Black Cloud and VMware CloudHealth are now all available on the AWS Marketplace to help AWS customers accelerate application modernization and migrate workloads to the cloud faster. The idea, VMware said, is to help organizations adopt a cloud operating model more rapidly and securely to efficiently connect today’s increasingly distributed workforces.

The big deal here is VMware Tanzu, which can now be used by AWS customers to build, run and manage apps that work on both AWS’ infrastructure and that of other clouds. Among other things, Tanzu enables self-service access for developers to container application clusters and a standardized and more secure build model for creating and managing those containers.

With Carbon Black, developers on AWS have access to a cloud-native endpoint, workload and container protection offering that provides prevention and automated detection capabilities for multicloud applications. CloudHealth meanwhile is a cloud health management platform that helps to manage cloud infrastructure, be it AWS or another public cloud platform.

Additional VMware Cross-Cloud services now available through the AWS Marketplace include CloudHealth Secure State, an intelligent cloud-native security and compliance platform that offers protection for cloud infrastructure resources, as opposed to the applications. Then there’s VMware NSX Advanced Load Balancer, an application services platform that’s used to automate load balancing, autoscaling, container ingress and more with centralized orchestration across clouds and on-premises environments.

Finally, VMware SASE combines software-defined wide area network capabilities with cloud-based security functions such as web security, zero-trust network access and firewalls. Companies can enable secure, remote access to their applications for distributed workforces, VMware said.
