Vercel raises $150M to expand its front-end web dev platform

Vercel Inc., the creator of the Next.js JavaScript framework for front-end web development, today announced that it has raised $150 million in new funding.

GGV Capital led the Series D round, with participation from existing investors Accel, Bedrock Capital, CRV, Geodesic Capital, Greenoaks Capital, GV, 8VC, Flex Capital, Latacora, Salesforce Ventures and Tiger Global, along with new investor SV Angel. This round follows its Series C in June and brings Vercel’s total funding to $313 million.

Vercel is best known for creating and maintaining the open-source framework Next.js, which enables React-based web app features such as server-side rendering and generating static websites. It provides a modern web development platform that allows the rapid prototyping of high-performance websites with the tools to make that happen.

Using the platform, developers no longer need the skills to build both back-end and front-ends for websites. Instead, developers can focus on the front-end using Vercel and offload back-end tasks to infrastructure and application interface plugins.

“With the web increasingly becoming the go-to platform for major app development and deployment and Next.js at the core of that movement, Vercel’s relevance and criticality only continue to grow,” said Vercel Chief Executive Guillermo Rauch.

Since Vercel’s Series A in April 2020, Next.js has grown by over 300% off an undisclosed base, with weekly npm installs growing from 500,000 to 2 million. Individual Next.js contributors doubled to 1,800 and traffic on its edge network grew by 700%.

The company said it’s prioritizing infrastructure with this funding round that will provide seamless integration with any tool. The idea will be to provide developers the ability to see the development lifecycle through an end-to-end platform.

To do this, the company will be expanding the capabilities of features that support both code and collaboration for DevOps teams such as Preview Deployments and Next.js Live.

Preview Deployments enables continuous integration and deployment and integrates seamlessly with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket for automated testing, automatic code updates and code collaboration. Next.js Live allows teams to instantly share, chat, draw and edit directly from a browser – no software or dependencies needed.

“The speed with which both the use of our platform and this market have expanded is simply astounding, and the strong support we have seen from our investors has been a major contributor to that growth,” said Rauch. “We look forward to using these funds to put even stronger capabilities into the hands of developers, faster.”

Currently, Vercel boasts more than 25,000 customers that include TikTok, Hulu, Ticketmaster, McDonald’s, IBM, Uber, Staples and Marvel. These companies are putting the platform to use in web and web-based mobile platforms for travel, news, e-commerce and marketing use cases.
