Transformation of telco industry continues as Dish Network pursues partnership with AWS

As the new 5G wireless standard continues its deployment across the globe, network operators and cloud providers are collaborating to open new windows of enterprise and consumer opportunity.

On Tuesday, Dish Network LLC offered details on how its previously announced partnership with Amazon Web Services Inc. will address connectivity needs for a wide range of users. In the process, Dish shed new light on how the telco industry is seeking to transform its current business model.

“Our speed of innovation was too slow,” said Marc Rouanne (pictured), executive vice president and chief network officer of Dish Network. “Your phone always works, it’s very reliable, you can have massive traffic, but the speed of innovation is not fast enough. What we want to marry is the reliability of the telco and all of the knowledge that exists, with the speed of the cloud. That’s what we are doing with AWS.”

Rouanne spoke with John Furrier and Lisa Martin, co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed Dish’s approach to network solutions and its work with AWS to build a telco cloud. (* Disclosure below.)

Flexible connectivity

Rouanne’s interview followed the delivery of his keynote presentation during the second day of the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas. Dish is seeking to architect network solutions that will allow enterprises to deliver flexible connectivity based on need, such as during a major stadium event.

“You have access to data so you see what’s happening, and then you use a lot of algorithms, machine leaning and analytics to make decisions,” Rouanne explained. “You can adapt the way you steer the traffic, the way you distribute video, the way you distribute entertainment to how people are moving. You can mix a lot of things and offer new services.”

This year’s collaboration with Dish represents a continued evolution in the telco space for AWS. The public cloud giant has been open about its interest in pursuing dialogue with a number of telecommunications providers.

“We have a lot of discussions about networking, routing, service-level agreements,” Rouanne said. “AWS is going all the way with us to transform their cloud, to make it a telco-friendly cloud.”
