Data democratization a key focus for Informatica as it expands partnership with AWS

Self-service should be easy and fast. A new artificial intelligence-powered solution from Informatica LLC for AWS Lake Formation is designed with these principles in mind.

As part of AWS re:Invent 2021, enterprise data management specialist Informatica introduced a way to democratize access to cloud data lakes in Amazon Web Services Inc. using Lake Formation, a service designed to make it simple to store and access information.

“It starts with data discovery, how to even find my data assets and how to get them from where they are to where they need to go in the cloud,” said Rik Tamm-Daniels (pictured), vice president of strategic ecosystems and technology for Informatica. “The solution we announced is really focused on how to provide business users with a self-service way of getting access to data lake data sitting in Amazon S3 with Lake Formation governance in a way that doesn’t create an undue burden on business users around data compliance and policies. We focus on addressing data management no matter where the data lives.”

Tamm-Daniels spoke with Lisa Martin and David Nicholson, co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed two additional data-focused programs announced during the conference and Informatica’s robust earnings over the past quarter. (* Disclosure below.)

Need for cloud native footprint

Informatica, which returned to the public markets in October with a $841-million initial public offering, had an active release cycle at re:Invent. In addition to its announcement for AWS Lake Formation, the company also unveiled two new programs with AWS around modernization and migration.

“We announced membership in the Workload Migration program and the Data-Led Migration program, which is part of the public sector focus at AWS as well,” Tamm-Daniels said. “We have to transform our business, we have to have data, we have to have trust in data; how do we do that? We’re not going to get there on rigid on-premises infrastructure. We need to be in a cloud native footprint.”

That cloud native focus has reaped benefits for Informatica to date. The company reported a robust quarter in late November, and the volume of transactions processed on its platform has been on an upward curve, according to Tamm-Daniels.

“Our cloud revenue grew 44% year-over-year, which is reflective of our big shift to being a cloud-first company, and also the success of our intelligent data management cloud platform,” he noted. “We process about 23 trillion transactions per month for customers in our cloud platform, and that’s doubling every six to 12 months.”
