Waymo to add Geely’s electric Zeekr vans to its U.S. ride-hailing fleet

Alphabet Inc.’s autonomous driving unit Waymo revealed today it’s working with the Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group to integrate that company’s purpose-built electric robotaxi minivans into its U.S. fleet.

Waymo plans to install its autonomous driving systems, known as Waymo Driver, into Geely’s new Zeekr vehicles and eventually roll them out in U.S. markets.

Zeekr is a new brand by Geely that was introduced in March in order to rival Tesla Inc. The company launched its first Zeekr model, a sleek crossover, in China last month. However, the Waymo version will be a little different, with more of a minivan look to it.

The company said the battery-powered vehicles are being designed and built in Gothernburg, Sweden, and will later be shipped to the U.S., where it will integrate Waymo Driver. The AV system consists of hardware in the form of lidar, sensors and cameras, plus software.

Waymo didn’t say how many Zeekr vehicles it’s buying, nor did it say when they might be pressed into service. However, it indicated it may be some time before they’re out and about on U.S. roads.

“We’ll begin to introduce these all electric, rider-first, fully autonomous vehicles on U.S. roads within our Waymo One fleet in the years to come,” Waymo said.

Geely’s Zeekr vehicles are true autonomous cars, with a “rider-first” design featuring a flat floor that allows for more accessible entry. Other features include a low step-in height and generous head and legroom with fully adjustable seats, Waymo said.

Most notably, the Zeekr Cars are built in anticipation of a future where cars are truly autonomous, as they lack both steering wheel and pedals. That will ensure whoever is sat in the driver’s seat will have plenty of legroom to stretch out and relax.

The rider-first design allows more focus on entertainment, with each passenger having access to a tablet-like display and mobile phone charger.

The Zeekr vans will join the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vans and Jaguar i-Pace SUVs that Waymo already uses in its Waymo One ridehail programs in Phoenix and San Francisco Bay.
