Veritas updates NetBackup with new cybersecurity features and cloud integrations

Veritas Technologies LLC today debuted a new version of its flagship NetBackup backup and recovery platform that features an expanded set of cybersecurity features, as well as improved public cloud support.

Santa Clara, California-based Veritas is a major provider of data protection software with more than 80,000 customers worldwide. The company says its installed base includes 87% of the Fortune 500.

NetBackup 10, the new release of Veritas’ flagship backup and recovery platform, can automatically run malware scans to find potentially malicious files in a company’s systems. The platform provides the ability to scan a file during the backup creation process, as well as before an earlier copy of the file is restored. Checking a backup copy of a file for malicious code before it’s restored helps administrators block malware that wasn’t detected earlier.

Improving the user experience is another focus of today’s product update. In NetBackup 10, Veritas has implemented integrations with two of its other software products to ease administrators’ work.

The company offers a product called NetBackup SaaS Protection that helps enterprises back up the data they keep in software-as-a-service applications. The product is now integrated with the NetBackup 10 interface. The result, according to Veritas, is that administrators can centrally monitor software-as-a-service deployments and other technology assets through a single pane of glass.

The other product with which NetBackup 10 has been integrated is the free version of Veritas’ NetBackup IT Analytics software. The software helps administrators find potential technical issues, such as faulty backups or important files that are not backed up regularly.

Companies use NetBackup to protect data both in their on-premises environments and public cloud deployments. As part of today’s update, Veritas is adding more features to address the latter use case.

The major public cloud providers all offer multiple types of data storage infrastructure that vary in performance and price. NetBackup has a feature that can move a company’s backup data to less expensive cloud storage infrastructure, which reduces costs. Veritas is rolling out an improved version of the feature as part of NetBackup 10 that it says can reduce the cost of storing backup data by up to 95%.

Veritas also enhanced the platform’s deduplication capability on the occasion. Deduplication is a compression technique that reduces the amount of storage space necessary to accommodate a company’s data, thus further reducing cloud costs.

“Enterprises are accelerating their cloud transformation to deliver new business outcomes where they need a broad and modern platform to cost effectively provide data protection and ransomware resiliency in multicloud environments,” said Deepak Mohan, executive vice president of products at Veritas. “NetBackup solves this problem today.”

As part of the cloud-focused enhancements rolling out with NetBackup 10, Veritas is adding improved support for a number of services in Microsoft Corp.’s Azure platform. Those services include the Managed SQL and Azure SQL databases, as well as the Azure Blob Storage service.
