Armed with $25M, Pangea Cyber debuts embedded security APIs for cloud-native app builders

Embedded security services provider Pangea Cyber Corp. is opening the doors to its business, emerging from stealth mode today armed with $25 million in a Series A funding round led by Ballistic Ventures.

Pangea has developed what it says is a comprehensive portfolio of application programming interface-based security services that can be accessed via a single platform. It’s all about making life easier for application builders, giving them a simple way to embed security and compliance features that they would otherwise have to create from scratch.

The startup believes that’s necessary because cloud-native applications today have become so complex that many developers lack the expertise and resources to secure them properly.

That’s a problem, Pangea explained, because the onus has always been on developers, who have had to write security code from scratch. Pangea provides an alternative: Through its portal, developers can simply embed the security services and APIs their applications need in a matter of seconds.

The startup says its portal will provide developers with a choice of several dozen security-focused, API-based microservices, including its own APIs for Secure Audit Logging, Secure Object Store, Secure File Share and Digital Embargo Check, plus various third-party APIs. To begin with, Pangea is making its Secure Audit Logging and Redact services available for free via an early access program, with more services to follow soon.

Pangea co-founders Oliver Fredrichs and Sourabh Satish have pedigree in the cybersecurity field, having previously founded a company called Phantom Cyber Corp. that became a leader in the area of Security Orchestration, Automation and Response. Phantom Cyber went on to be acquired by the observability company Splunk Inc. in 2018. The technology Fredrichs and Satish built is now the foundation of Splunk’s SOAR platform.

Friedrichs, the company’s chief executive officer, said the security industry has traditionally always been focused on products for enterprise end-users rather than application builders. “We are seizing the opportunity to give builders the capabilities they need to deliver a compliant and secure customer experience, easier and faster,” he said.

Ballistic Ventures General partner Barmak Meftah said he’s backing Pangea because it simply isn’t feasible for enterprises to expect every software builder to be an expert in security as well.

“This is a huge problem that needs to be addressed and an enormous opportunity,” he said. “We’re excited to partner with Oliver, Sourabh and the Pangea team to reshape how the world thinks about embedding security into their applications.”
