Organizations can have all the cutting-edge cloud infrastructure, but it all falls flat without the proper tools needed to harness and take advantage of their data resources.

Catering to that need, Snowflake Inc. made a slew of announcements during its the Day 1 Keynote at this week’s Snowflake Summit.

“I think the Native Application Framework is the one that looks like … it has the biggest potential to change everything,” said Christian Kleinerman (pictured), senior vice president of product at Snowflake. “That is to create an entire ecosystem of solutions for within a company or across companies.”

Kleinerman spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Snowflake Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed new Snowflake announcements and the company’s strides toward unifying the entire application development stack. (* Disclosure below.)

Reducing friction in app development

Developer teams have had to grapple with bridging the divergent areas of databases, analytics, containers and data pipeline stacks, with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning now part of that mix. One of the ways Snowflake is approaching this dilemma is by tapping open source.

“The way we think about using open source versus not using open sourcing, open formats, or even open APIs is: Does it help us deliver the solution that we want for our customer? Does it help us solve their problems?” Kleinerman explained. “In certain instances, it has in the past, and we’ve open-sourced frameworks.”

While Snowflake leverages open technologies and integrations when it sees fit — with the example of the just-announced Iceberg Tables integration — the core philosophy around proprietary innovation is still maintained, Kleinerman added. By integrating the popular open table format, users can better manage, tag and classify on-premises data.

Unistore and other notable announcements

A major highlight of the company’s keynote announcement was Unistore, its new workload allowing for analytical and transactional data to be managed together in a single platform. In a move to make data silos a thing of the past, Unistore is positioned for use cases that will encourage data collaboration and faster analytics for large-scale data.

“With Unistore, you can just say, ‘I’m going to do the bookkeeping with these new tables called hybrid tables,'” Kleinerman explained. “The loads are transactional, and all of this is a single transaction. So for anyone that has dealt with inconsistencies in the database world, this is like a godsend.”

Another notable announcement was Snowpark for Python, which brings native support for the Python programming language over to Snowflake’s developer platform. Additionally, the company unveiled improvements to data access within its platform. Snowpipe Streaming allows for serverless loading of streaming data, with support for Materialized Tables set to follow.

“The data cloud thesis is that we want to provide amazing technology for our customers but also facilitate collaboration and content exchange via our platform,” Kleinerman said. “And all that we did today is expand what that content can be. It’s not just data or a little helper function; it’s entire applications and entire experiences. That is the summation of the impact of our announcements today.”
