Snowflake is not just a data warehouse: TheCUBE analyzes day 1 summit keynote

This year’s three-day Snowflake Summit kicked off Tuesday with a focus on data collaboration. Headlining the day 1 keynote was Snowflake Inc. Chief Executive Officer Frank Slootman, who addressed the company’s market standing, technological advancements and growth plans.

TheCUBE was live at the Summit, providing analysis on the Keynote address. A primary takeaway during the event kickoff included Snowflake’s mission to demystify the narrative that it’s not just a data warehouse with a walled garden framework — it’s open to innovation, according to Doug Henschen (pictured), vice president and principal analyst at Constellation Research Inc.

“They’re letting us know, ‘We’re not just a data warehouse that migrates your old workloads into the cloud; we’re helping you innovate with things like the data marketplace,’” Henschen stated. “They have this mix of big-tent customers and then very forward-looking and sophisticated customers. And that’s whom they’re speaking to with announcements like Unistore being able to reach out to any source and bringing in transactional data to innovate and create new apps.”

Henschen spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Snowflake Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed insights from the Snowflake Summit keynote, including clearing the air that Snowflake is not just a data warehouse. (* Disclosure below.)

Snowflake is not taking its foot off the gas

Snowflake is ticking many boxes through its diversification approach, from automated governance to decentralized architecture, according to Henschen.

“They’re just coming on with things like Python support,” he explained. “They’re introducing machine learning algorithms and time series built into the database. So, in some ways, they’re catching up while painting this vision of future capabilities and talking about things that are in development or private preview.”

By bringing the database and analytic stack together, Henschen believes Snowflake seeks to broaden the spectrum so that data can be monetized.

“With Unistore, they’re reaching out and trying to bring transactional data in,” he said. “Don’t limit this to analytical information; there are other ways to do that, like CDC and streaming. They’re very closely trying that again in the marketplace, with the idea of bringing your data over there and you can monetize it; don’t just leave it in that transactional database.”

Based on a customer-centered approach, Snowflake is laying emphasis on data monetization and distribution and educating the community, Henschen pointed out.

“The stats say it all, the fastest company to a billion in revenue … they want to help customers even with these budget and cost-control measures,” he said. “That’s what I think some competitors don’t just get about Snowflake. They don’t get that it’s all about the community, the network they’re building, and the relationships between these customers.”
