Evinced raises $38M to help enterprises build accessible websites and mobile apps

Startup Evinced Inc., which helps companies build accessible websites and mobile apps, has raised a $38 million funding round led by Insight Partners.

Evinced announced the Series B round today. Lead investor Insight Partners was joined by a number of other backers, including Microsoft Corp.’s M12 venture capital arm, Capital One Financial Corp., BGV and Engineering Capital.

Palo Alto, California-based Evinced provides software tools that help companies fix accessibility issues in their websites and mobile apps. The startup’s software can detect if some features of an online service don’t work with screen readers, or if they may be inaccessible for people who use a keyboard to navigate the interface. Evinced is capable of detecting other types of interface flaws as well.

Usually, enterprise software teams search for accessibility issues in their applications manually, which can take a significant amount of time and effort. Evinced says its software’s ability to automate the detection of accessibility issues streamlines the process. Moreover, it also promises to ease other parts of the development workflow.

After developers detect an accessibility issue, they have to find the root cause, which can be difficult when troubleshooting a complex web service or mobile app. Evinced’s software automatically highlights the snippet of code that is causing an accessibility issue to help developers resolve the problem faster.

Also in the interest of streamlining the troubleshooting process, Evinced has built algorithms that generate remediation suggestions and provide code samples explaining how to fix common issues. Accessible issues are prioritized by severity to help software teams fix the most pressing interface flaws first.

Evinced enables developers to use its feature set in several ways. The startup provides a tool for finding accessibility issues in mobile apps, as well as a Chrome extension that software teams can use to test websites. Evinced also offers a second website testing tool that can automatically scan all the sections of an online service for accessibility issues.

Another focus area for Evinced is helping developers detect and fix interface flaws before they are released to production. To that end, the startup provides the ability to integrate its software with a company’s quality assurance systems. Developers can, for example, link Evinced’s software to an automated application testing tool and use it to evaluate every code update before rolling it out to production.

Since its launch in early 2021, Evinced’s technology has gained significant traction among enterprises. The startup says that its user base includes four of the 10 largest financial institutions in the U.S. and two of the three largest enterprise software-as-a-service providers, as well as other companies. Capital One, which participated in the new round, is one of its customers.

“What we’re seeing is pent-up demand,” said Evinced co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Navin Thadani. “Since we solved most of the technical problems that made large enterprises rely on a manual approach to digital accessibility in the first place, they’re excited to see that finally they can truly ‘shift left,’ which makes everyone – customers, employees and the world – a winner.”
