Open-source session replay tool startup OpenReplay raises $4.7M

OpenReplay, a startup that provides an open-source session replay tool for developers, said today it has raised $4.7 million in new funding to grow its community, accelerate deployment at scale and improve user experience.

Runa Capital led the seed round, with Expa, 468 Capital, Rheingau Founders and Tekion co-founders also participating. Including the new funding, OpenReplay has raised $6.2 million to date, according to PitchBook.

Founded in 2018, OpenReplay offers an open-source session replay suite that helps developers reproduce issues in their web apps. Session replay software lets a company record and visually play back a session to understand a user’s experience better.

OpenReplay’s solution combines session replay with powerful DevTools enabling developers to see where users are getting stuck and to troubleshoot issues faster by making debugging visual.

The company argues that bugs are inevitable and fixing them starts by reproducing them, an often time-consuming process in production environments. As they grow in complexity to full-fledged applications, websites make bugs even harder to replicate.

OpenReplay’s DevTools allow developers to analyze logs, diagnose errors, track performance metrics, inspect HTTP payloads and record the entire application’s state. Being able to replay, side-by-side, what users were doing and how the stack behaved after every interaction is said to be like reproducing issues in your own browser.

The tool combines session replay, DevTools and performance monitoring to make it easy for developers to replay everything users do on their web app and understand where and why they got stuck. OpenReplay’s service can also be used to assist customers directly on the website while they’re browsing, using live session replay and co-browsing capabilities — no more cryptic reports, screenshots and endless back-and-forth emails with customers.

OpenReplay is self-hosted, so data never leaves a company’s infrastructure. The security aspect is important for enterprise companies that are unwilling to expose themselves to security and compliance risks.

“While other session replay tools are targeting marketers and product managers, we focused on those who actually build the product, developers,” Mehdi Osman, founder and chief executive of OpenReplay, said in a statement. “Enabling developers to self-host it on their premises and without involving any third party to handle their user data is a game-changer.”
