Cloudian expands product portfolio with new HyperBalance load balancer

Cloudian Inc. today expanded its product portfolio with the introduction of HyperBalance, a new load balancer that companies can use to optimize their storage infrastructure.

Cloudian is a data management startup backed by more than $170 million in funding. The startup sells software that companies use to manage their business data, recover from outages and reduce the risk of ransomware attacks. Its software can run on both cloud and on-premises infrastructure.

The startup also has a presence in the data center hardware market. It sells storage appliances that are pre-integrated with its software and promise to provide 70% better cost-efficiency than traditional data center storage systems.

HyperBalance, the new load balancer that Cloudian debuted today, is designed to be used with the startup’s HyperStore platform. The platform helps companies manage information that is stored in the form of objects. A company’s applications can access information kept in HyperStore, make changes and add new records through an application programming interface.

HyperStore deployments often comprise multiple storage systems. According to Cloudian, its HyperBalance load balancer can evenly distribute applications’ data requests between the storage systems in a HyperStore environment to optimize performance. Distributing requests avoids the performance issues that can emerge when a large amount of application traffic is sent to a single system.

“As organizations focus on extracting greater value from their growing data volumes, they need a highly scalable, secure and cost-effective modern storage foundation that can keep up with the performance demands of their applications,” said Larry Meese, Cloudian’s vice president of products and solutions.

In some cases, load balancing can also reduce the risk of outages. The technology makes it possible to automatically detect when a system experiences technical issues and redirect application requests to another system. As a result, applications can continue processing data even in the event of a hardware malfunction.

According to Cloudian, an added advantage of HyperBalance’s ability to simplify traffic management is that it makes it easier to expand HyperStore environments when additional capacity is needed. The software promises to similarly ease troubleshooting tasks. HyperBalance has been equipped with network monitoring features that administrators can use to collect data about technical issues and identify the best way to troubleshoot them.

The release of HyperBalance comes a few months after Cloudian expanded its portfolio with a professional services offering dubbed HyperCare. It gives organizations the option to have Cloudian manage their deployments of its software. The startup can carry out day-to-day maintenance, plan storage upgrades and perform related tasks.
