Teradata debuts new VantageCloud product suite to ease data analytics in the cloud
Teradata Corp. today launched VantageCloud, a suite of products designed to help companies more easily extract insights from their business data.
Publicly traded Teradata is a major player in the data management market. The company sells a data platform that organizations use to centrally store business information and analyze it for useful insights. Last quarter, Teradata generated $55 million in adjusted operating income on revenue of $430 million.
Teradata’s newly launched VantageCloud product suite comprises three components. The first component is the company’s existing data platform, while the second is a new, cloud-native version of the platform dubbed VantageCloud Lake. The third offering in the product suite is a set of data analytics features dubbed ClearScape Analytics.
VantageCloud Lake, the new cloud-native version of Teradata’s data platform, is the main highlight of the suite. According to Teradata, VantageCloud Lake will save time for information technology teams by automating several day-to-day maintenance tasks.
VantageCloud Lake is designed to run on public cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services. According to Teradata, a built-in auto-scaling mechanism can automatically add more hardware resources to a company’s VantageCloud Lake deployment when the need arises. The platform makes it possible to scale compute and storage resources independently.
If an analytics environment is configured to automatically provision more infrastructure when applications require it, errors can emerge. An application may accidentally request more infrastructure than needed, which can lead to cost overruns. To address the challenge, Teradata has equipped VantageCloud Lake with controls that it says will enable customers to avoid cost overruns in their analytics environments.
VantageCloud Lake deploys software updates automatically when they become available to save time for administrators. Manual maintenance tasks, in turn, can be performed through a centralized management interface.
“With Teradata VantageCloud Lake, we now support all analytic workload needs at every level in the organization, enabling companies to be more nimble, experimental, and innovative in an easy-to-use solution without losing the governance and cost visibility that Teradata is known for,” said Teradata Chief Product Officer Hillary Ashton.
In addition to its features for easing day-to-day management tasks, VantageCloud Lake includes a set of new data analytics capabilities dubbed ClearScape Analytics. The capabilities include the existing analytics tools that were available until now in Teradata’s data platform. ClearScape Analytics also ships with a set of new features focused on two main use cases: time series analysis and machine learning.
Time series analysis is the process of analyzing datasets that are organized chronologically. A dataset containing purchase logs, for example, might organize the logs chronologically based on the order in which the purchases were made. Companies use time series analysis for many types of business intelligence projects.
Teradata says ClearScape Analytics includes more than 50 time series analysis and machine learning workflows. The workflows are integrated directly into VantageCloud Lake. As a result, carrying out time series analysis and machine learning projects using data stored in VantageCloud doesn’t require moving the data to an external analytics tool.
VantageCloud Lake also ships with a set of features designed to ease the task of running AI models in production. The features reduce the amount of work involved in deploying and managing AI models, according to Teradata. Additionally, ClearScape Analytics promises to help administrators more easily detect when a potential technical issue emerges in a neural network.
VantageCloud Lake and ClearScape Analytics are available immediately. VantageCloud Lake supports AWS on launch, with support for additional cloud platforms set to be added next year.
