AWS lays out plans to increase storage sustainability

In the current macroeconomic environment, cost optimization is increasingly a focal point of businesses. But can cost be effectively saved without giving up convenience and simplicity?

Amazon Web Services Inc. is tacking this paint point head on. The company is introducing new solution capabilities regularly with Amazon S3, which  introduced storage classes last year, including Glacier Instant Retrieval, allowing for instant retrieval of seldom-used data at a small fee.

“Things like our Glacier Instant Retrieval storage class that we launched at re:Invent last year or things like our S3 Storage Lens capability, really dig in and help customers identify where their costs are being spent,” said Kevin Miller, (pictured) vice president and general manager of S3 at AWS.

Miller spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante at AWS Storage Day, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed cost optimization and AWS’ plans to increase storage sustainability. (* Disclosure below.)

Don’t let sustainability take the sidelines

Amazon S3’s storage classes now provide cost optimization and simplicity, and the company also aims to make sustainability simple for their partners. On top of offering cost-saving measures, Amazon S3 has put a focus on sustainability, with ambitious goals in the coming decades, according to Miller.

“Within AWS, of course, you know we’re on a path towards operating with 100% renewable energy by 2025,” he said. Amazon also has an overall goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2040.

Specifically within its S3 storage, Amazon has committed to transparency and developed a carbon footprint tool to offer companies a better overview of carbon emissions. This step allows for partners to make more ecologically minded decisions.

“The cloud continues to be just a great place to run and reduce a customer’s carbon footprint,” Miller stated. “We’re looking at ways that we can continue to help customers do more to aggressively drive down their carbon footprint.”
