Accenture and AWS weigh in on industry-specific cloud use cases

The reach of digitization and business transformation has expanded to span a wide gamut as industries such as manufacturing and raw material extraction get in on the action.

Cloud, it appears, is now moving toward enabling specific industry capabilities across disparate areas.

“We see the evolution of industry cloud a little differently and a lot more dynamic,” said Karthik Narain (pictured, left), lead for Accenture Cloud First at Accenture PLC. “We see this as a marketplace where an ecosystem of capabilities are going to come together to interact with a common data platform, backbone and model with workflows that’ll come together and integrate all of this stuff and help clients reinvent their industry with newer capabilities.”

Narain and Tanuja Randery (pictured, right), managing director for EMEA at Amazon Web Services Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Furrier at the AWS Executive Summit at re:Invent, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the proliferation of industry-specific cloud demand and the subsequent use cases. (* Disclosure below.)

The ‘industry cloud’ paradigm

As cloud technologies evolve, the implementation of industrial cloud as a separate strategic tenet will become commonplace, according to Narain. But, interestingly, the numbers show that 90% of organizational workloads are yet to be moved to the cloud, according to Randery. A litany of factors and variables, such as disparate infrastructures, are behind it. The first step to cloudifying workloads at a bigger scale and accelerating these industry-focused cloud solutions is the complete unification of business and IT, she added.

“It means starting with business use cases, whether that’s digital banking or smart connected factories,” Randery said. “Taking those use cases and leveraging them to really drive outcomes with the technology behind them is the key unlock that we have to get to.”

A major example of this is AWS’ work with Ryanair DAC in estimating on-air food requirements for passengers, according to Randery.

“So we work with them leveraging AWS cloud and AI/ML to build a ‘panini predictor,'” she said. “And in essence, it’s taking the data they’ve got and data we’ve got and actually giving them the opportunity to have just the right number of paninis.”
