Spatial launches a VR toolkit for creators powered by Unity
The immersive 3D social metaverse developer Spatial launched a creator toolkit today that will allow its users to build their own virtual worlds, connect with other users, and share immersive experiences powered by the Unity graphics engine.
The Spatial Creator Toolkit provides creatives with everything they need to build experiences in virtual reality and what is called the metaverse, an interconnected space of virtual worlds people can socialize, interact and play together in immersive environments.
By using Unity’s software development kit, Spatial will be able to provide a greatly increased level of visual quality directly through the web browser, enabling a larger audience to access Spatial’s metaverse. Unity provides game-level development capabilities and professional rendering quality to scenes, which in turn upgrades everything about Spatial experiences.
“Making immersive platforms easy and accessible for anyone to come in and start building, without prior knowledge in digital design, has always been an important factor in making Spatial the inclusive and open metaverse it is today,” said Jinha Lee, co-founder and chief product officer of Spatial. “This toolkit will open doors for creators to make out-of-this-world and exciting places to be, in just a few clicks.”
The gaming industry is often at the forefront of creating visually stunning 3D experiences and photorealistic graphics, and the Unity gaming graphics engine is no exception. Spatial’s existing partners are already using the new toolkit in their metaverse worlds to upgrade their experiences. They include Exclusible Yacht by Polycount and Bubble Park by DaeWha Kang. Luxx Studios, a metaverse studio composed of Disney Imagineer award-winning Web3 designers, also built an experience using the new tool.
To provide users with building the best possible metaverse worlds, Spatial recently announced an integration with Sketchfab, a library for virtual reality 3D models. With access to a wide variety of 3D models and objects through Sketchfab, users of Spatial’s new Creator Toolkit will be able to create highly customizable worlds for visitors to socialize in from concert venues to business casual, natural vistas or even to outer space.
With the Creator Toolkit, creators will also enable previously unavailable interactivity with immersive environments between user avatars and the experiences. For example, with the Unity engine, added objects will allow creators to add interactive objects such as soccer balls that can be kicked or drivable cars to metaverse worlds, opening up new opportunities for virtual experiences.
“Creating professional-grade lighting would previously have taken a trained designer at least two days to achieve, and now anyone can do it in a click of a button,” Anand Agarawala, co-founder and chief executive of Spatial, said about the Creator Toolkit. “It simultaneously publishes across web, mobile and VR to make building so seamless that literally anyone can be a top-rate digital developer.”
This year Spatial has added a variety of new features to its metaverse worlds for users including in-room chat, social profiles, photo and video functions, as well as avatar dances and emotes. The company also partnered with Ready Player Me to bring full-body customizable avatars to the platform, which enabled Spatial to sell metaverse apparel and other merchandise from Tommy Hilfiger, Vogue, L’Oreal, Maybelline and other brands.
Since changing from an enterprise VR platform for collaboration to a social metaverse platform a year ago, Spatial has grown to more than 500,000 registered creators whose work has been viewed by more than 2 million users. And those users have clocked in more than 127 million hours on the platform viewing creations and socializing in Spatial’s metaverse over the past 12 months.
