Digital transformation, colocation and multicloud environments bridge the gap between on-prem and cloud

Security, sustainability and a cloud-like experience are in demand across most markets.

As companies transitioned to using multiple data storage and compute solutions, both in the public cloud and private platforms, the need for a customizable, cost-effective platform continues to emerge.

“Customers very much want that cloud experience, but they want to do it on their own terms,” said Cliff Evans (pictured, left), senior director of HPE GreenLake. “The cloud experience and with the GreenLake cloud platform deliver that genuine cloud experience. Then building cloud services on top of that, they’d get all the benefits that they would have from a public cloud experience but the way that they would prefer to do it.”

Evans and Corey Dyer (pictured, right), chief revenue officer of real estate investment trust company Digital Realty Trust Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at the HPE Discover 2022 event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed sustainability and customized cloud solutions. (* Disclosure below.)

Sustainability and a unified edge-to-platform experience in demand by enterprises

Sustainability is a central theme in customer conversations, according to Dyer. Through right-sizing and throttling usage, HPE and Digital Realty Trust help enterprises lower their energy consumption and decrease their carbon footprint. Combined with consulting and intentionality around powering the data solution needed, energy savings are often substantial.

“From a GreenLake perspective, there’s a specific impact report that looks at GreenLake and how it performs from a sustainability perspective — and GreenLake really is giving you 30% reduction in your energy consumption,” Evans said.

Company needs are driving this specific solution on two fronts: The first is over-rotation to the cloud, followed by repatriating data; the second is that companies have been moving away from the data center business.

“There were a lot of customers with good intentions on going to the cloud, and there’s some cost with it that maybe they didn’t fully factor in at that time. And when they originally did it, they didn’t think through a distributed architecture. That’s not really the most efficient way,” Dyer stated.
