New Qualcomm Aware Platform assists in digital transformation programs

Qualcomm Technologies Inc. today unveiled a new platform designed to empower developers and enterprises to harness real-time information and data insights so they can accelerate their digital transformation programs.

The Qualcomm Aware Platform seeks to address the issue wherein ecosystem fragmentation and system design complexity often prevents “internet of things” deployments from meeting their full potential. Qualcomm Aware combines silicon and an extensive ecosystem of hardware and software partners with a developer-friendly cloud framework to offer services for managing assets that require critical, accurate and time-sensitive decision-making, according to the company.

The platform provides ubiquitous global connectivity, intelligently optimizing and fusing location technologies with sensor alerts, critical device management and control features. The combination is said to provide a new baseline for IoT and assist enterprises in driving operational efficiencies.

Critical use cases that can be served by Aware include cold chain distribution, utility asset monitoring, cargo shipment tracking and warehouse and inventory management.

The Aware service rests upon three key pillars: technology leadership, enablement of an expansive ecosystem of hardware and software partners, and application programming interface-first architecture and developer-friendly tools that enable interoperability with partner clouds and leading enterprise software tools.

The platform extends beyond silicon, incorporating technology from Skyhook Wireless Inc. and PoLTE Corp., both companies acquired by Qualcomm in 2022. The technology includes proprietary positioning techniques and a robust global signal database of about 8 billion wireless Media Access Control or MAC addresses and hundreds of millions of cells.

In combination with Qualcomm’s existing location technology, the acquired technology enables Aware to deliver intelligent and ubiquitous location capabilities in an always-on, low-power manner, according to the company. The platform is designed to work in challenging signal environments, including indoors, underground and when devices are offline, providing critical awareness and condition monitoring context to enterprise solutions for end-to-end asset and operational visibility.

The platform includes cloud security tools and the encryption and mutual authentication of all device-to-cloud communications. It also delivers global cellular connectivity, device management and provisioning.

“Qualcomm Technologies is rapidly diversifying with new opportunities,” Jeff Torrance, senior vice president and general manager of connected smart systems at Qualcomm, said in a statement. “Qualcomm Aware is designed to support organizations across industries with a scalable, cost-effective, capital-efficient investment solution that delivers an accelerated time to market, simplifies digital transformation, and delivers transformative insights needed to mitigate risk, make more informed business decisions, and navigate challenges across industries.”

Initial launch partners include Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, BASF SE, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp., Ferrero International S.A., Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd.), Maersk A/S, Microsoft Corp. and Mondelēz International Inc., among others. Qualcomm Aware is expected to be available later this year.
