Inside VMware and HPE GreenLake’s deepening hybrid cloud collaboration

Some VMware Inc. staff who had been working on the virtualizer’s Dell Technologies Inc. partnership were moved to a growing VMware/HPE GreenLake hybrid cloud collaboration, according to Ricky Cooper (pictured, right), vice president of global and transformational partners at VMware Inc.

After Dell spun off virtualization technology company VMware, the 2021 separation conceivably had the advantage of allowing for more flexibility in relationships for VMware — of which Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. is one.

“We’re in a position now where we can redeploy some of the headcount to really drive our mission here with our other partners, and certainly with HPE,” Cooper said.

Cooper and Rocco Lavista (left), vice president, worldwide sales and go-to-market leader for HPE GreenLake, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and John Furrier at last year’s HPE Discover event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the escalating software/hybrid cloud-oriented partnership between HPE GreenLake and VMware. Marketplace and stack are behind it

“If you want to be successful, you have to think that the world is open and hybrid,” said Lavista. “And that means partnerships with everybody.”

There is mileage to be had taking advantage of other technologies and platforms’ marketplaces: VMware has a marketplace as do other potential partners. (In addition to his formal titles, and notably in the discussion, Cooper is also interim senior vice president for the channel and commercial business at VMware).

“You can’t think, ‘I won’t partner because they’re a competitor’ or ‘They may have a product that competes with me,” Lavista said.

He explained that it’s VMware’s software, too, that can become more interwoven as a part of the HPE product offering to customers.

“We’re taking the VMware stack and we’re scaling it with the hardware up and down for customers,” Lavista said. “They no longer have to worry about the balancing act between how much infrastructure I have to buy. How much software do I have to marry up to it? Are they out of sync? We’re solving that together for our customers,” he said.
